Whodathunk?

Such an amazing thing happened to me tonight, yes this very night. An Epiphany. A huge one. Here's how it went. I got home late from teaching at the U of U, looking for a little snack, thinking about making a huge root beer float as a night cap. However, the kids were saying they were still hungry, probably because they didn't eat anything when it was dinner time, and I didn't want to share the root beer with them, that would mean less for me. I told them to get some stick cheese. Tierra asked if she could have an apple. I said, sure. The catch was, she wanted it cut. You may remember from a previous post my feelings towards apples in their natural form. Part of this previous animosity is due to the fact that they are such a pain in the butt to cut. So I tell Tierra to ask her mom to do it. Tierra replies, "Dad, it is so easy, you just do this"... and makes a gesture with her hand that resembles a single motion cutting movement. I laughed at her and made some comment about, "if only it were that easy." So as I mill around a little more, she gets out this gadget that I have unloaded from the dishwasher many times and often wondered what it was. Not ever remembering long enough to one day ask Rebecca what it was or what it was for, I always quickly stuck it in a drawer and got it out of my mind. So Tierra, continues to try to show me how to cut an apple, when it all comes together. Hence, my epiphany. Who knew? What a cool invention. This little machine thing takes away all the hassle from preparing apples to an eatable form. I love it. I had one and half apples for a snack tonight. AMAZING. (The root beer float is still in my near future.)

So exciting. If you don't have one, I highly recommend it. The one pictured above is by Pampered Chef. Coolest thing since sliced bread, but its sliced apples.

Besides all that above, the kids are way excited for Halloween. I get to work. Please send your kids out responsibly, with reflective tape and so on. It seems like we get a call for a kid hit by a car every Halloween. Anyhow. I had to include this next picture because it goes along with my previous post about strangers in the photos. The guy right behind me looks awesome and angry, and the guy on the far right is sleeping at a football game. I bet he's embarrassed if he ever finds out. I just look dorky like normal and I need a hair cut. Rebecca is 'smokin' (not as in Camels, as in gorgeous) as always.

I guess I better throw in some pictures of the kids too. Here they are playing one of their favorite games, Memory. These kids kick my butt in memory. Are kids naturally good at this game or something? I know I am not that bad....

And last but not least, baby Haylee. Such a good baby. Always smiling, always happy, except when her diaper is full or her belly is empty...but who isn't that way right? Of course, she was a little interested in the camera as well, with the pre-flash red-eye eliminator thingy. (That's my "almost-a-photography-minor-knowledge" coming through.)

I have one of those apple thingies from Pampered Chef and I don't love it. I don't mean to burst your bubble, but sometimes it leaves part of the hard thing from the core in the apple. I'm an old-fashioned knife kind of girl. But, to each his own, I'm glad you're eating apples.

Cute kids. Love the update, glad the Simons are doing well. Any safety tips on trick-or-treating in 2 feet of snow. My best idea for us this year might be stay home. The kids might be trick-or-treating from room to room inside the house this year.

Happy Haunting.

Do you wear diapers too? I thought I was the only one. I am laughing about you not knowing about the apple corer/slicer. Those things are not a new invention, we had one growing up and my parents are no spring chickens. Do you know about ice cream scoops for your float....they make getting the ice cream out of the container much easier. Okay look in the dishwasher for a thing that kind of resembles a spoon but it is much bigger, it may have fluid inside it so give it a little shake....yes thats it and Rebecca probably keeps it in the same drawer as that apple thingy.....try that instead of bending all your spoons in half and getting ice cream to your elbows.

April, you make me laugh!

Chad, welcome to 21st (or, actually 20th) century kitchenware.

Yes, your wife is always smokin'! Cute, cute, cute kids, too. What are they going to be for Halloween?

that is hilarious! when maddy would finally eat fruit, i always made mike cut the apple because it's such a pain. but now she'll just hold them & eat it whole, so i'll do that as long as she'll let me! your kids are too cute.

Chad, you are so silly! Apple corers/slicers have been around quite a while. Spend some more time in the kitchen, and please stop sending the kids to their mom if you don't want to do something. ;)

Love the pics and this post in general. Thanks for the update! Happy Halloween! --Allison

I think you've just pursuaded me. I hate cutting up apples, and I seem to do it every day. The red delicious have been awesome this season. I always think, "I should just get an apple slicer," but then I never do. I am writing it on my list right now. There. Done.

I love my apple slicer. I don't think Nathan knows what it is called either. But your realization of teh wonders of this invention should make you jump for joy every time Rebecca goes to a Pampered Chef party. Regardless of what she spends, because they definately have some awesome kitchen gadgets!

Ok people, listen, I am blessed with a wife that loves to cook and takes great care of me. I don't have to know what these tools that fill our drawers are called or what they do. These small discoveries are few and far between, but they are wonderful little moments for me.

I did just realize that the apple had a sticker on it, and I did not remove the sticker, so I probably ate a sticker yesternight as well.

Really? Really??

You are lucky to have such a hotty!

I have the Pampered Chef one that also peels the apple. The bad thing is it only works on the very crisp apples.

I think it is sweet you say your wife is smokin!

Your wife must take great care of you if you don't know about the apple slicer/corer. However, I too think they are a little over-rated. Just cut the thing already. Cute wife, cute kids!

Chad, there's a thing on the internet called a search engine. Use it. http://www.barproducts.com/media/onionslicer.htm

Allison, I use a laptop, it doesn't have any engines. It operates on batteries.

Um...so just out of curiosity, what did you think the apple slicer was for? Seriously, you hadn't really ever wondered what that thing was for? I can't believe it.
